Yesterday was a real winter day here.Temps were near -10°C and the wind was very strong from the N and NW.Windchills were in the -20°C range.
It was somewhat better here than other parts of the province where a lot of people had to endure the cold with no power and they had a lot more snow.We only had a slight amount of snow but,as one would expect,it is frozen solid.
From today's Chronicle Herald:
Winds reached a Herculean 195 kilometres per hour along the Cabot Trail in Cape Breton, near Grand Etang, 124 km/h in Yarmouth, 104 km/h in Halifax and 90 km/h in most of the rest of the province. Temperatures everywhere rose slightly above freezing in the early hours of Monday before diving to about –5 for the rest of the day, except in the Sydney area where the thermometer hovered around zero.
Over 100,000 customers were without electricity at various times Monday.

The wind has finally died out and temps are expected to moderate overnight and be above freezing by tomorrow morning with rain in the forecast.Rainy and mild weather is expected for Chrismas Day.

Saturday Dec 13 - Cooler

Yesterday was another warm, wet and windy day here.Temps reached into the low double digits but the wind and rain made for a 'not so nice' day. There were periods of torrential rain lasting into the evening.Total rainfall was reported at near 25mm making a two day total of about 70mm or almost 3 inches.Wind gusts were clocked at 90 km/h.We also had a period of thunder and lightning in the early evening.
We were lucky enough to be on the warm side of the front as parts of Massachusetts and New Hampshire were coated in ice, bringing down trees and knocking out the power to approx 500,000 customers. They may be 'powerless' for many days and the news reports resembled a war zone.To compound the problem, the weekend weather there is forecast to be below freezing, like here, with warmer weather returning next week.

'Winter hits early, surprisingly hard
Hundreds stuck overnight in vehicles on the Cobequid Pass
By CHRIS LAMBIE Staff Reporter and The Canadian Press
Thu. Nov 20 - 7:37 AM
A blast of winter weather closed the Cobequid Pass on Wednesday and made for slippery driving across Nova Scotia.
Hundreds of people spent the night stuck in their vehicles in on the stretch of highway s a severe snowstorm hit the province dumping as much at 15 centimetres over higher elevations.
At one point RCMP estimate as many as 1,500 cars were backed up along a three kilometre stretch of the four lane divided highway.
Nova Scotia officials shut down the toll road between Masstown and Thomson Station at about 4:35 p.m. on Wednesday.
Impatient motorists complicated matters by trying to get around stalled or slow moving vehicles further jamming up lanes and making it almost impossible for plows to get through.
Eastbound traffic is moving once again but it could be a few hours yet before traffic is flowing along the the westbound lanes.
High winds and heavy wet snow also knocked out power in a swathe running from Bayers Lake across the province to Oxford.
More than 20,000 homes lost power in the storm.
"The outages are kind of in a line," said Nova Scotia Power spokeswoman Margaret Murphy.
Power should be back on around 6 a.m. today in Bayers Lake, she said.
But in areas where the weather closed highways, the work could take longer.
"Obviously the crews are going to work through the night and put back as much power as they can," Ms. Murphy said.
Where highways are impassable, power crews may be able to travel with snow plows to get the work done, she said.
"We’re still in the throes of a good snowstorm right now," Wayne Crossan, a manager at the Highway 104 Western Alignment Corp., the toll road’s private operator, said at 6:15 p.m.
"We probably have upwards of 10 centimetres at this time and blowing snow to go with it.
"We still have vehicles that are stuck, we still have vehicles off the road, and I haven’t seen a plow go by here in probably 30 minutes," Mr. Crossan said.
"I’ve heard traffic is backed up as far as Exit 11, which is Londonderry. And there’s nothing getting by here." On the plus side, the snow was accumulating at Ski Wentworth.
"I’m sure the people over there are smiling a little more than we are right now," Mr. Crossan said.
Police also shut down a section of Highway 103 at about 7:30 p.m. Central and northern areas of the province got snow Wednesday evening, said Ming Szeto, a meteorologist at Environment Canada’s Atlantic storm centre in Dartmouth.
"They’re still reporting rain in the eastern areas — that’s Guysborough, Pictou, Antigonish and Cape Breton," Mr. Szeto said at about 7 p.m.
Parts of Highway 101 were also impassable.
The precipitation was expected to taper off to flurries and end overnight, he said.
"But right now, there’s been a lot of snow reported in central Nova Scotia," Mr. Szeto said.
Winds out of the northwest were blowing at 40 kilometres an hour, with gusts up to 60 km/h, he said.
Today is supposed to be cloudy with sunny periods. Halifax is expected to have a high of 1 C.'

Cooler..But Still Nice

We ended October ‘08 on a cool note. The temps were in the low double digits for the daytime highs and down to the frost level in the nights. It was a real nice Halloween night…clear, not too cold and quiet.I’m sure the kids had fun.We only had 14 ‘Trick or Treaters’ here so I get the leftovers!!

The forecast has flurries in it for us for tomorrow and then warming up into the double digits by mid-week.It seemed early for snow to be forecast for here and then I remembered last year.On Nov 10th we had a snow storm!! Heavy, wet, miserable snow.Fortunately it didn’t last but…..we had to walk home a couple of kms that night. We were at a party and the power and phone system got knocked out from the weight of the snow on the wires. No comms,no drive….c’est la vie….LOL.

Be sure to check the cams tomorrow to see if we get any flurries here.

NOTE: I currently have the cams’ server computer set to auto start/shut down from 7AM to 7PM.No sense wasting power to display darkness.

Later folks,

Very Warm

It is still very mild here on the South Shore of Nova Scotia.I have a temp of +17°C on my thermometer this afternoon. That’s right, plus 17 Celcius which is almost 70°F ! I’ll bet a lot of you thought that Canada was cold and snowy most of the time.It is also very calm and somewhat foggy here today.

Last evening we had some rain and a bit of wind…..of course, the power went out for about an hour. That seems to happen a lot here.Maybe NSP should take some of the rate increase revenue and repair / replace the old wires rather than just patch them.

We are expecting the warm weather to last until Wednesday and then it’s back to more normal conditions with Thursday possibly being a little below the seasonal norm.

So,the ‘yo-yo’ temps are continuing.

Still Mild

After a couple of very warm and sunny days we are going to have some rain. The temp is still mild and is at +12°C currently. There isn’t any rain yet but it is quite breezy and damp.Thunderstorms are also a possibility for tonight. There are lots of leaves dropping in my backyard today:

The warm air is expected to last until Tuesday and then it will be clearing and cooling somewhat.

Cold - Warm - Cold - ?

Well,I haven’t had much time to pound out an entry lately but I thought I’d better get an update on here this morning while I could. The weather has been going up and down like a yo-yo here.Monday was a cold and windy day, yesterday was warm and sunny and today we are back to cold.It is only about 8°C here this morning and overcast and windy. There were flurries forecast for us for earlier in the week for today but that has been revised to none. However, parts of New England, not far from here, are either getting or have already had some snow activity. This is not a snowstorm but any kind of snow at this time of the year is a little out of the norm. Our weather is expected to improve over the next few days and we should be getting back to more normal temps.Normal for here at this time of the year is 11°C according to Environment Canada. FROST!!!

It’s a very cool +2°C here this morning and there was a frost overnight. That’s the first one for our area this Autumn.Temps are expected to remain cool through the weekend with a slight warm up and rain next week.

Warm and No Rain

It’s another warm day here on the South Shore, temp near 20°C,and the rain hasn’t happened…yet.Currently it is quite cloudy and the radar is showing the rain is in the NW of NS.Some may move in here later but it looks like most of it will miss us.It is also very calm here.
All for now.

Still Staying Warm

We are having awesome weather here on the east coast. It has been warm and fairly dry…temps reached the lower 20s here on my thermometer this afternoon.Apparently that is about to change with a chance of rain tomorrow and Friday and then cooler temps moving in for the weekend.Thankfully…and hopefully…we won’t get anything like central Canada has had recently. They have had freezing temps and SNOW!!! It’s way too early for that.Especially for this area.
On another front, there is a large hurricane, named Omar,in the Caribbean and it is moving NE.The current track has it coming within 900 or so miles from our shores as it travels across the ocean. The UK may get some of it in about 6 days.

Here’s some Autumn color from our area courtesy of another local photographer.Thanks,Brenda….

Thanksgiving Day '08

Happy Thanksgiving to my fellow Canadians!!
This morning we are getting a little rain and it’s quite a bit cooler today after some really nice weather on the weekend.
You couldn’t ask for a nicer day than we had yesterday, with temps near 20°C,and this photo I took while out fishing says it all:

This week is expected to be cool with temps in the seasonal range.Daytime highs are normally 13°C at this time of the year.

Remaining Warm

It’s been pretty quiet here lately so there’s not much to report. The temps have been running in the upper teens to mid twenties during the day and dropping to between 6 and 10 overnight.Except for yesterday, when we had some drizzle and fog,it has been dry.
The Canadian Thanksgiving is this coming Monday and the weather for the long weekend is expected to be dry, sunny and warm.
That’s all I have for now.

Cool and Quiet...A Warm Up On The Way

Autumn may be here according to the calendar but we will be getting some almost summer-like weather in the next couple of days.Friday’s high is expected to be 21°C!!It’s not expected to last very long but we do like those temps.
It actually has been quite nice here on the South Shore for the past few days. The temps have been holding in the middle to upper teens and the nights were mild up until last night when it dropped to about 8°C.Tonight is another cool one and it is currently only 6°C on my thermometer.I am sure there will be a frost in the inland areas tonight.
There are currently no storms on the way to report on.

Oct 2,2008 Update

Afternoon Update.
Just a few quick lines to update the current conditions here. It’s raining quite hard by times, windy and mild with the temp near 20°C.
I should update this blog on what Kyle did here as the report is actually in my WeatherBug blog.We were without power from 8:30PM Sunday until 7:30AM Monday.
There wasn’t much damage, just mostly downed trees in the area.I picked up 4 or 5 small branches in my backyard and that was all.Monday turned out to be a very hot day with temps near 30°C and quite humid. The sun came out in the early afternoon and the winds diminished to just a slight breeze. So,that was about it….it wasn’t as bad as it could have been.
One other quick note.My west cam is now mounted outside.I shouldn’t have to worry about it being blocked by snow, like it has before in the window where it was mounted, unless the drifts get to be about 12 feet high.I hope that doesn’t happen!!!

October Arrives

NOTE:I will be keeping this blog updated, atleast for awhile. The other one doesn't seem to be working out.Posts have to be 'approved' and they are very slow in getting them on site.

The following is my entry sent to WeatherBug yesterday that still hasn't been published:

October has arrived and with it so has more Autumn-like weather. It has cooled off considerably here from what it was a few days ago and it is expected to remain this way.Actually, the temps are now beginning to be more seasonable now. They are running in the middle teens on the Celcius scale for daytime highs and dropping into the single digits through the overnight hours.
Some rain is expected here today and tomorrow and then it’s back to sunshine to finish out the week.
Early Autumn is usually a pretty nice season here but it does tend to have it’s cool and windy days.On the good ones,it’s always enjoyable to get out in the country and snap a few shots like this one I took a couple of years ago:

Hopefully we’ll get some nice colors again this year. That is yet to be seen though, the leaves really haven’t begun to change very much in this area yet this year.It appears that the mild weather we had through September has extended the growing season and the trees are still mostly green as this pic I took last Thursday shows as I was heading out of Brooklyn harbor on a sport fishing trip:

BTW,the fish weren’t biting and we came back empty handed.Maybe next time we’ll do better. We’re hoping to get out again next week.

Kyle Was Here

Kyle wasn’t too bad here.We lost power for 11 hours (from 8:30PM Sunday to 7:30AM Monday) and,so far,I only see one branch down in my backyard. The wind was quite strong for most of the night but we received very little rain here.It is now beginning to clear, the winds have diminished and a partly sunny day with temps near 20°C is expected.
More updates on damage as they become available.

Watch our weather as it happens via our cam(s).Click here.
Note: The temps shown in the forecast block in this blog are reported from the nearest local weather station located at Western Head which is very near the ocean. The temps there are quite different than here usually.
