Today’s Weather Trivia:
9 July 2005: After 2 Calgary, AB, climbers were lost in a large slide on Mount Athabasca in Jasper National Park, an unprecedented summer avalanche warning was issued. The avalanche was about 300 m wide and up to 80 cm thick. In the past 3 weeks, several avalanches had occurred. A large snowfall, along with heavy rain in June, created a rain-soaked snowpack covered by a thin crust at higher elevations. – Excerpt from 'The Canadian Weather Trivia Calendar' by David Phillips. © Environment Canada
