Today's weather trivia: 12 December

1924: Brutal cold gripped the west. Red Deer, AB, seemed to feel the deepest
cold in Canada at -50°C. A week of snow dumped 80 cm with 35.6 cm in one
day. Pedestrians had to trudge through snow to their waists. Schools were
closed and businesses might as well have been closed. Trains from Calgary
and Edmonton, AB, were stalled for hours. Old-timers agreed that the storm
was the worst ever in Red Deer.
