Today's weather trivia: 6 October


1939: Weather delayed 2 crown witnesses from appearing at a manslaughter
case before the Manitoba Supreme Court. A heavy rainstorm forced their plane
down on Lount Lake, near Kenora, ON. On 5 occasions over 3 days they tried
to take off, only to be forced down by poor visibility and incessant rains.
Their chief worry was enough cigarettes and fuel. In the end, they made it
before the grand jury.

1923: Torrential rains and record floods swamped Truro, NS, and nearby
villages, resulting in the destruction of bridges, flooded cellars, downed
trees, and disrupted traffic. Winds felled the flagpole at the post office,
breaking it below ground level. Sheaves of grain and drowned pigs floated
down the swollen Salmon River. The enlarged creek took out a barn from which
a horse disappeared forever.

Today's weather trivia: 4 October


1990: A freak storm raced across the lower Great Lakes at 100 km/h. Its
winds ripped holes in roofs and caused power outages across parts of Metro
Toronto, ON, and elsewhere in southern Ontario. Trees with limbs the size of
one's body fell on tops of cars and lay across live wires, starting fires in
transformers. Winds in Peterborough, ON, reached 130 km/h, plunging parts of
the city into darkness.

1959: A TCA Viscount airplane hit the mud 500 m short of its Toronto runway
just missing a hydro transformer; 40 people escaped a flaming death by less
than 1 m. The airplane bounced twice and skittered across Malton Road before
smashing into a fence. It might have been caught in a downdraft during a
severe thunderstorm. Ironically, the soggy ground likely prevented a major
tragedy.

Today's weather trivia: 2 October


1910: A huge storm over northeastern Ontario inflicted minimal damage, such
as streetcar-line and utilities stoppages. At Haileybury, over 500 persons
were in a theatre when darkness enveloped it; candles were used to furnish
light. As the storm was unexpected, several patrons had neither a wrap nor
an umbrella. Rigs were pressed into service and by midnight the last persons
had left for home.

1920: A storm bearing 120 km/h winds hit Quebec City, inflicting extensive
damage. Among downed services were streetcars, telephones, and electricity.
The winds ripped roofs off homes and damaged the tops of large buildings and
churches. Everywhere streets were blocked by rubble and downed power lines.
Firefighters were busy extinguishing wind-driven blazes.

Today's weather trivia: 30 September


1920: A storm with 70 km/h gusts struck Quebec City, QC, and area. The winds
lifted a portion of the roof off St. Jean Baptiste Church, throwing it to
the street and disrupting traffic. The winds fanned a fire caused by a spark
from a nearby mill. The fire threatened to destroy a nearby convent,
populated by 134 children and 100 nuns. The children promptly left the
burning building without any panic.
