Today's weather trivia: 1920: About 11:00 PM, lightning struck the Royal
Jubilee Hospital in Victoria, BC, at the identical point it was struck just
a few weeks before. Fortunately, this time it did not set fire to the
building; a few shattered shingles and 2 broken windows in the nurses' home
was the only damage. Patients were a little perturbed, but the staff soon
ascertained there was no cause for alarm.

2004: Despite an early snowfall, a large number of the citizens of Edmonton,
AB, voted in the civic election. Turnout was much higher than predicted,
given the weather:-3°C, more than 10 cm of snow, and moderate winds. Roughly
42% of eligible voters cast ballots, up from the 2001 election, which drew
35%. Apparently, voters were unfazed by the weather and twigged by an
interesting contest.

2007: An intense storm began to cross the centre of Vancouver Island, BC,
bringing with it heavy rains and high winds-the leftovers of Tropical Storm
Lingling. Vancouver, BC, received 66 mm of rain over 3 days and wind gusts
in excess of 40 km/h. The high winds seriously injured a woman who was
struck when a tree snapped in half and fell on her in a parking lot.

1862: A German architect, famous for building ice palaces in St. Petersburg,
Russia, proposed erecting one on the St. Lawrence River, at Montreal, QC, as
a tourist attraction. It would be 13 m high, 50 m long, 20 m deep, and all
ice, except windows and doors. Rooms, including a ballroom, would be heated
by stoves and warranted not to melt. It would be built in 4 weeks, for about
$3,500.

2003: In BC, Greater Victoria's water, which smelled earthy and musty like
corn husks or peat, prompted a record 400 complaints. The culprit was an
algal bloom. In late September, northerly winds and wave action concentrated
the organisms near the city's water intake system. Algae bloom in fall
because of increased nutrient availability, abundant sunshine, and
unseasonably warm weather.

1920: In Yukon, very low water levels and early October temperatures below
-20°C caused early ice up on several rivers between Whitehorse and Dawson.
Ice tore up the wheel and rudders of several boats and sank barges. Every
American Yukon Navigation Co. steamer below Dawson froze in the Yukon River;
4 passenger steamers and a large mail boat met the same fate between Dawson
and Tanana.
